Although we have an enhanced understanding of headache disorders and more treatment paradigms available, a large number of people do not have adequate treatment. Important components to this gap include economic disparities and barriers to access of care. This special interest section will attract individuals committed to identifying, understanding and ultimately serving underserved populations, in the U.S. and abroad, to improve the lives of all headache sufferers.
Goals & Objectives
- Enhance the understanding of the spectrum and impact of headache disorders on underserved and underrepresented populations via educational and scholarly activities.
- Create an active medium for liaisons with international groups addressing these issues, including World Health Organization initiatives such as Lifting the Burden.
- Provide leadership in targeting and helping underserved populations through educational activities and possible interventional activities with primary care-givers.
- Identify barriers to care and create strategies to overcome these barriers.
- Recruit new members to the American Headache Society® who may have a specific interest in reaching underserved populations.
